Coffee With Mike- Appreciating Stability

About this time of year, people are thinking about New Year's resolutions. I don't have any idea why that's part of our culture, but it is. So people are going to say, "hey, what do you want to change?" I'm going to say, "I think I've had enough change for right now. I'm going to think about what I want to keep, what I hope stays the same." Not the I'm against change, of course, and I'll go with the flow when more changes needed, but i also want to think about the stability i have in my life.

My New Year's resolution, one I'm suggesting for you, is I'm going to appreciate the stability I have in my life. I'm going to look at the things that I hope will stay the same: the relationships I have; the time I have alone; the books I get to read; the activities I get to take part in' the community I'm a part of; the people who surround me; the people I work with. I'm going to take a look and just take note of who they are, why I enjoy them, what they do around me and what they do for me, and what I do for them. Appreciate the relationships I have in my life and really thank them for a part for their part in providing me the stability I want in my life.

I want to take a look at the work I do and the way I do it, and see what I want to keep the same. Appreciate the fact that I have work to do. Appreciate the fact that I have people who care about the work I do, and I hope to make that stable, I hope that stays the same. I want to take a look at the things that I'm currently reading, I don't want to create a book list of things I need to read- I do have about 80 books I have on my Kindle that I haven't read yet- but I want to make sure that I'm grounded in the reading that I'm doing that I think is particularly important for me. For me, that's the Bible, for me, that is a prayer guide, and for me, that is the New York Times- I don't know why it's important for me, but it is, I want to read it.

The thing is, there are things in life that are going to change, and maybe need to change. That's going to take care of itself. I don't think I need to go around looking for it, particularly not right now. What I need to look for right now are the sources of stability in my life and give thanks for it, and let them know I appreciate them, and appreciate it, whatever those things around us are, if they're not people, things, just appreciate the situation and circumstances that provides stability. That's my New Year's resolution.
