Thinking About Leaving Your FERS Career? Make Sure You Know What You’d Be Giving Up

Hi, I’m Mike Lanway with All About FERS.

If you’re a FERS employee and you’re thinking about leaving your federal job, I want you to pause for a minute. There is still real financial value in your FERS career, no matter how many years you have left. Before you make any big decisions, give us just a bit of your time to show you what you’re working with.

Because here’s the truth: whether you choose to stay and make the most of it, or you’re considering a move to the private sector, you need to understand what your federal career is worth — and what you’d need to match or beat it elsewhere.

Most Employers Can’t Compete With FERS

If you do decide to leave, you need to know how to negotiate with a future employer. Ask yourself: what would a new employer need to offer you just to break even with what you’re giving up?

The answer might surprise you.

Let’s take one benefit as an example: FERS Disability Retirement.

It’s available to any FERS employee who has at least 18 months of service. That means even a 20-year-old who gets disabled in a car accident could receive lifelong income support. That kind of long-term protection? Most private employers can’t come close to offering it.

Ask a potential employer, “If I become disabled after 18 months, will you take care of me for the rest of my life?” The answer will almost always be no. But your federal career says yes.

Get the Full Picture With the FERS Progress Report

We’ve created a tool called the FERS Progress Report to help you see all your benefits in one place, including the disability protection you may not even realize you have.

If you’re considering a change, let us help you understand what you’re holding before you let it go.

Join our free webinar on Thursday, July 24 at 12 PM Eastern and learn how to:
