FEGLI at the End of Your Career? Here’s What You Need to Know Before Letting It Go

Career Transition, Early Retirement, FEGLI, Life Insurance, Risk

Hi there, Mike Lanway with All About FERS.

This morning I’ve been thinking about FEGLI. That’s the Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance program. It’s something you might have signed up for when you first became a federal employee, especially since it doesn’t require medical underwriting in your first 60 days.

But now? You might be at the tail end of your federal career, wondering what to do next. Maybe you’re looking at early retirement, separation, or just feeling the need to plan ahead. The big question becomes: what should you do with your FEGLI?

If You or a Loved One Feels Uninsurable, Listen Closely

FEGLI might be more important now than ever, especially if you or a family member has health issues and doesn’t qualify for private life insurance. This is the time to learn about FEGLI conversion options. These are the paths MetLife, the provider behind FEGLI, gives you to turn your group coverage into an individual policy.

No medical questions. No underwriting. Just a straight conversion.

Now, it might not be everything you want. And it might not be at a price you love. But if your health (or a family member’s) means that other doors are closed, this might be the only door left open.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

Too often, folks wait until their separation date is looming before looking into this. That’s risky. If you lose eligibility before you understand your options, you could lose more than just a policy. You could lose the peace of mind that comes with knowing your family is protected.

Take time now to explore your FEGLI conversion rights. If you’re nearing retirement or facing a separation and wondering what your options are, get familiar with the process.

We’re Here If You Need Help

You don’t have to figure this out alone. This is exactly the kind of thing we walk through with federal employees every day.

If you’re not sure what your FEGLI coverage means, or if a conversion makes sense for your situation, reach out. We’re here to help you make a decision that fits your real life, not just a benefits handbook.

Wishing you clarity and confidence,
